Primary PE & Sport Premium

Homepage Children and Young People (schools) Primary PE & Sport Premium

The Department for Education’s vision for the PE and  School Sport Premium

VISION:  All pupils leaving primary school should be physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport in primary schools.

OBJECTIVE: To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools.

There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across:

  • the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
  • the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  • increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • increased participation in competitive sport

How to use the PE and School Sport Premium

The Department for Education updated their guidance for PE and Sport Premium for Primary Schools including a coronavirus update. To read the guidance click here

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport you offer.

This means that you should use the premium to:

  • develop or add to the PE and sport activities that your school already offers
  • build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

Schools should use the premium to secure improvements in the 5 key indicators above. To see examples, click here

What your funding should not be used for

You should not use your funding to:

  • employ coaches or specialist teachers to cover planning preparation and assessment (PPA) arrangements – these should come out of your core staffing budgets
  • teach the minimum requirements of the national curriculum – with the exception of top-up swimming lessons after pupils’  completion of core lessons (or, in the case of academies and free schools, to teach your existing PE curriculum)
  • fund capital expenditure

Ofsted inspections

Ofsted assesses how primary schools use the primary PE and sport premium. They measure its impact on pupil outcomes, and how effectively governors hold school leaders to account for this. Click here for a guide produced by AfPE
